Secure Your U.S. Visit: VWP & B-1/B-2 Visa Guide
Welcome to the Law Offices of Chris M. Ingram, your trusted partner for navigating U.S. travel authorization options. Whether you’re eligible for visa-free travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) or need a traditional visitor visa (B-1/B-2), our expert guidance will help you prepare confidently and avoid costly mistakes.
What Is the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)?
The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) allows citizens of certain countries to travel to the United States for business or tourism for up to 90 days without a visa. Travelers must have a valid passport from a VWP country and obtain authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before departure.
ESTA does not guarantee entry; U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) makes final admissibility decisions at the port of entry.
How ESTA Works
- Apply online at the official ESTA site: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/
- Provide passport and travel details, and answer eligibility questions.
- Authorization is usually issued quickly, but it should be completed before booking travel.
- ESTA approvals are generally valid for two years or until passport expiration.
Current VWP Eligible Countries (2026)
To qualify for the VWP, you must be a citizen or national of one of these countries:
Europe
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom
Asia-Pacific & Americas
Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan.
Special Passport Notes
- Taiwan: Treated as a “country” under U.S. law for VWP eligibility, but only for passport holders with unrestricted permanent residence and electronic passports.
- United Kingdom: Only British citizens with unrestricted right of permanent residence qualify.
What If You’re Not Eligible for the VWP?
If your country is not part of the VWP, such as India, China, or many African nations, you’ll generally need a B-1/B-2 visa to visit the U.S. for business or tourism.
B-1/B-2 Visitor Visas Explained

Common Application Challenges
Section 214(b) Denials
Non-immigrant visas are often refused under Section 214(b) for inadequate proof of strong ties to your home country, such as employment, family, or property. Showing compelling evidence is crucial to avoid denial.
ESTA Risks
Missteps in your ESTA application, including incomplete or inaccurate answers, can lead to denial or cancellation, harming future travel plans.
